Andrew J. Torres Memorial Golf Tournament -
April 18, 2005
La Canada Country Club

Recently friends from La Caada contacted us and generously offered HMRI the proceeds for cancer research from their golf tournament. The First Annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for April 18, 2005, at the La Caada Country Club. Andrew Torres was a young Marine, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, who died from liver cancer in 2004 at the age of 23.
Andrew's mother, Anita Brenner Torres, told us that before he died Andrew had his parents promise to help find a cure for his kind of cancer. She met with Dr. Riggins and program director Dr. Michael Harrington and was impressed with the direction and objectives of their research on liver tumors. We will apply the funds to support a new project by Dr. James Riggins in the Molecular Neurology Laboratory to find markers for liver cancer.
Many of Andrew's friends from Flintridge Prep, Class of 1998, are on the organizing committee and have created a website with tournament information at www.andrewtorres.org.
