Marine�s Friends and Family Gather to Remember, Fight Against Cancer

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE - The First Annual 2nd Lt. Andrew Torres Golf Classic was held on Monday April 18th at the La Ca�ada Flintridge Country Club. Andrew Torres was a young Marine, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, who died from liver cancer in 2004 at the age of 23. The event was organized by classmates and family of Lt. Torres.

Two hundred and seventy guests joined the committee for an awards dinner following the golf tournament, including many classmates of Lt. Torres, parents and friends from Flintridge Preparatory School, members of the UCLA Law School Class of 1973 and ladies from the La Ca�ada Thursday Club.

Ito, Linder and Chandler offered toasts to the United States Marine Corps, to Lt. Torres and to a cure for cancer.

William Opel, PhD, the executive director of Huntington Medical Research Institutes (HMRI), told the audience about the Torres memorial research project, a search for a biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma. He also explained that HMRI is an independent, nonprofit, public-benefit organization dedicated to improving health and prolonging life by enhancing knowledge of life processes and disease, and by developing technology to diagnose and treat diseases.

William G. Corey, M.D., director of clinical investigation at HMRI's Liver Center, thanked the Torres family and the committee. 'It's very important to continue our studies to try to find effective treatments and/"
